Don’t get it twisted, there’s racism in Formula 1, too

Formula 1’s winningest, most visible driver, Lewis Hamilton, got called the N-word by FF1 champion Nelson Piquet in an interview during the 2021 season. Piquet is the father of 2021 F1 world champion Max Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly. Verstappen is Hamilton’s biggest rival in F1, and that’s about as far as I got before l found a hangnail more interesting than car racing. Speaking on a podcast in his native Portuguese, Piquet used a slur that’s the equivalent of the N-word in Brazil while talking about Hamilton, which is pretty jarring if you were under the illusion that Formula 1 is a classier NASCAR. Nope, it’s just as reprehensible as America’s favorite motorsport, but with exotic locales such as Monaco and Melbourne that aren’t synonymous with racism like Alabama and …

Some More Things That Should Die In 2018

Last week, we ran staffers’ nominations for shitty things of 2017 that should stay in 2017. Because we are bad at organization, we left out some things. Here they are. The Majestic Plural Being neither a sovereign nor a pope, I’ve never had trouble keeping track of how many of me there are. Pay any attention at all, though, and you’ll notice that a lot of people either are having trouble with this or are speaking not only for themselves but for God, or the Commonwealth, or, more usually, everyone—me, presumably, included. As I can only assume many people do, I keep a running list of examples of this, if just to keep track of all the things I’ve apparently been thinking and doing that I wasn’t aware of. This is how I can tell you that I have been living, with you, in a “ho…

Becks To Kick Off Countdown To London 2012

Some jolly good media types are reporting that David Beckham will participate in the Closing Ceremonies at the Beijing Games. The report says that he'll ride into the stadium on one of those double-decker buses, and then eat a modest portion of some fish and chips. [ BBC Olympics Blog] • I don't know who adult film star Savannah Samson is, but apparently some of the Yankees do. Yankees. How appropriate. See what I did there? [ The Insider] • One of the clauses reportedly in the services contract Brett Favre turned down? He'd have to write a blog. I'm sure every entry would have been about how much Peter King means to the sportswriting world [ Machochip] • Ian Crocker's finish in the 100m butterfly was a bit disappointing [ Kornheiser's Cartel] • The p…

Hypothetical Grievances Presented By An Australian Newspaper To Defend Its Big-Lipped Serena Williams Cartoon, Ranked

To riff on Serena Williams’s spat with umpire Carlos Ramos in the U.S. Open final, the Melbourne Herald Sun published an illustration of the tennis player, drawn by editorial cartoonist Mark Knight, which has since been met with international disgust. Today, like any normal newspaper, the Herald Sun opted to dig in its heels and bemoan the PC World that promises to make life “very dull indeed.” The strategy was to place this Serena caricature alongside other caricatures that would be absurd to suppress. How silly everyone will look then, thought the newspaper editors while affixing a large pink ass to the cover of their newspaper. After ransacking the thesaurus entry for SILENCED!!!!, they decked out the front page with a series of extremely legitimate and highly relatable grievan…

Taysom Hill Can Slash You to Death

data-mm-id=”_tbrkcut0p”>Taysom Hill was everywhere on Sunday night, especially the places that mattered most. The New Orleans Saints' Swiss Army Knife of destruction blocked a punt, caught a touchdown pass, and broke off a 30-yard touchdown run after lining up as quarterback. He's perhaps too much of a known entity to say it was a coming-out party, but considering the captive and tryptophan-infused audience, his unique game was eye-opening. .@T_Hill4's had himself a FULL Thanksgiving plate: ? Blocked punt? Receiving TD ? Rushing TD @Saints | #Saints pic.twitter.com/yB5oKyfW9S— NFL (@NFL) November 29, 2019Hill played 35 snaps in the division-clinching win. Quarterback. Wide receiver. Tight end. Special teams — though perhaps he should have been tasked with fielding th…

Media Predicting Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs Dynasty is Shortsighted

data-mm-id=”_9zsjvqfwo”>In the aftermath of the Super Bowl, many of the questions directed toward Patrick Mahomes and his teammates centered around the Chiefs becoming the next dynasty. While Frank Clark wasn't afraid to take the bait and say the Patriots dynasty is dead and the Chiefs is just beginning, most of the other KC players were more realistic, shooting down comparisons to the Patriots, knowing a dynasty isn't built in a day. If only the media reacted similarly. In what can only be described as an overreaction of epic proportions, everyone from ESPN to USA Today to Bleacher Report discussed their belief that the Chiefs dynasty started on Sunday with a win over the 49ers. While all may well be prophetic, they're also coming off as extremely shortsighted. Since wi…

NFL Free Agency Predictions

data-mm-id=”_unbhevmci”>On March 18th, free agency opens in the NFL, which should kick off the wildest off-season we've seen in recent memory. Some of the players who have shaped the past decade and a half of pro football – Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, and A.J. Green among many, many others – are set to hit the open market, some for the first time in their careers. We don't profess to be fortune tellers as to where they'll eventually end up, but we'll try our best.NFL Free Agency Predictions Drew Brees Will Return for 2020, as a SaintSince the new year dawned, the Saints' future Hall of Fame quarterback has waffled on whether or not he will return for the 2020 season, with his stance shifting from "definitely returning" to "maybe returni…

Jeff Hornacek Gives Advice on How to Guard Michael Jordan

data-mm-id=”_tr7qix5rm”>Jeff Hornacek is an NBA lifer, playing for 14 years from 1986 to 2000 before entering the head coaching ranks. While he's been out of the league since 2016, some old memories will eventually be drudged up of Hornacek's time as shooting guard of the Utah Jazz. He was also a central figure of the 1997-98 team that lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in that year's finals. That season, of course, is the focus of ESPN's extremely popular Jordan documentary The Last Dance, with episodes 5 and 6 scheduled to be aired this coming Sunday. Hornacek guarded Jordan for much of those Finals. On Monday, FOX Nation will release Guarding Jordan With Jeff and Abby Hornacek, a special feature on Hornacek's experience going up against Jordan at t…
