Inter striker Lukaku scores 300th career goal

Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the first half of Inter s Serie A clash with Lazio on Sunday to bring up the 300th goal of his career.

The Belgium striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot at San Siro and added a second late in the opening period the goal allowed to stand after initially being ruled out for offside.

Lukaku moved onto 56 goals for Inter in all competitions since joining from Manchester United in August 2019, 16 of those coming in the league this season.

That is one fewer than the 27-year-old has scored for his national side at senior level, though he still has some way to go before equalling the 87 netted for Everton between 2013 and 2017.

Lukaku s other goals were scored for United (42), Anderlecht (41) and West Brom (17). He failed …

Brendan Rodgers admits new Celtic arrivals are needed after St Johnstone draw

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers admitted it was clear they need to bring in new signings to improve the team after a goalless home draw with St Johnstone.

The hosts failed to score in consecutive domestic games for the first time since May 2018, when they did so soon after winning the title for the second time under Rodgers.

Celtic delivered another flat display following their 1-0 defeat in the Viaplay Cup at Kilmarnock to allow Rangers to cut their deficit on the cinch Premiership champions to a point before next Sunday’s Ibrox derby.

Matt O’Riley forced a hat-trick of impressive stops from Dimitar Mitov, but Celtic largely struggled to test the Saints goalkeeper and Joe Hart pulled off excellent second-half saves from debutant Dara Costelloe and substitute …

Liverpool have to expect change under Slot, says Zenden

Former Liverpool midfielder Boudewijn Zenden admits there will be a change for the Reds under Arne Slot but says the club should be ready to buy into his philosophy.

Liverpool confirmed on Monday that Slot would take over from Jurgen Klopp, who managed his final game at Anfield against Wolves on Sunday.

The Dutchman had already announced that he would be taking the job in a press conference, with Klopp then leading a chant of Slot’s name in his farewell speech.

Slot has reportedly signed a three-year deal and will officially take charge from June 1.

Asked if the former Feyenoord manager can avoid a painful transition when he begins his new job, Zenden said Liverpool need to be prepared for any outcome.

Well, let s put it this way. Someone said …

Nicolas Pepe set for Trabzonspor

According to Fabrizio Romano, Nicolas Pepe is not a part of Mikel Arteta s project at Arsenal, and having rejected offers from Saudi Arabia, he s now set to join Trabzonspor. The Turkish club are his preferred destination at this point, and the talks between the clubs and the player s representatives are taking place in order to thrash out the terms of the transfer.

Arsenal are obviously ready to accept a reasonable offer for the services of the 28-year-old winger, who completely failed to justify the €80 million spent to sign him from LOSC Lille back in 2019, and who is now in the final year of contract at the Emirates.

In all competitions, Pepe scored 27 goals and produced 21 assists in 112 appearances for the Gunners, and spent last season on loan with OGC Nice.

Italy unveils Euro-2016 bid cities

The Italian Football Federation (Figc) has announced the 12 cities involved in its bid to stage the 2016 European Championships.

Figc, which also unveiled the official logo for its candidacy, said the cities are Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome, Turin, Udine and Verona.

Italy has not hosted a major football tournament since the World Cup in 1990, when West Germany emerged victorious.

Many new stadiums were built for that tournament and others remodelled but most of those have since fallen into disrepair and decline.

The 2016 European Championships could represent an historic opportunity to transform the quality, security and welcome in Italian stadiums and will continue the project of cultural renewal of our footbal…

Cunha ´very happy´ at Wolves despite Man Utd interest

Matheus Cunha insists he is very happy at Wolves amid speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

The 25-year-old, who is contracted at Molineux until 2027, is reportedly the subject of a £60 million bid by the Red Devils.

Cunha arrived from Atletico Madrid following an initial loan deal in January 2023 and, despite injury struggles, chipped in with 12 goals and seven assists for Wolves during the 2023-24 season.

The Brazilian, who was left out of the Selecao s Copa America squad, endeared himself to the Molineux faithful with a hat-trick against Chelsea, while he also netted in the FA Cup win against local rivals West Bromwich Albion.

Cunha has returned to his native Brazil for a post-season holiday, and was questioned about his future whi…

´Messi makes everything easier´ – Emiliano Martinez hails Argentina´s difference-maker

Emiliano Martinez hailed Lionel Messi for making everything easier after the forward ignited Argentina s World Cup campaign with a goal and an assist against Mexico.

Argentina battled to a 2-0 win in Saturday s Group C contest to avoid an early exit from Qatar 2022 and keep their hopes of both progressing and finishing top in their own hands.

Messi made a breakthrough with a long-range strike after 64 minutes in a game that had been low on quality up until then, before assisting Enzo Fernandez for his side s second.

That goal was Messi s fourth World Cup goal from outside the box – only former Brazil attacker Rivellino (five) can better that tally since such records were first recorded in 1966.

He has also now scored in six successive appearances for A…

Netherlands v Ecuador: El Tri see path to shock win over Oranje

Ecuador believe they can hurt the Netherlands as they look to take a huge step towards the knockout rounds by springing another World Cup surprise.

The South American side cruised to victory over hosts Qatar in the tournament opener last Sunday.

A double from Enner Valencia secured a 2-0 win, giving Ecuador the chance to triumph in their opening two matches of a World Cup for the first time since 2006.

Yet their record against European nations suggests that will be a difficult challenge.

Indeed, Ecuador are winless in their last four World Cup games against European sides (D1 L3), scoring just once across those four matches.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last eight World Cup matches against South American sides (W5 D3), since a…

Croatia v Belgium: Confidence, not quality, the key issue for Red Devils

Belgium have lost form at a terrible time at the World Cup, with their place in the last 16 at risk against Croatia, but Eden Hazard still believes in their quality.

The Red Devils were out of sorts in beating Canada 1-0 and were duly punished in their second match against Morocco, losing 2-0.

That defeat ended a 13-game unbeaten run in group-stage games at the finals, although they have not lost consecutive such matches since a sequence of three in a row across the 1982 and 1986 tournaments.

Another reverse against Croatia – who impressed in crushing Canada – would see them eliminated, while a draw may not be enough either.

We have to do better, we cannot deliver the performance we want [right now], said captain Hazard, who also skippered Belgium to…
